Experts with links to drugs industry 'hyped swine flu'
Conclusion This was a well-conducted study, albeit based on a small sample of articles. The finding that academics with ties to the drugs industry were more likely to make a higher assessment of risk from swine flu, and those promoting the use of antiviral drugs were more likely to have industry links, is worrying. The general issue of academics with undisclosed links to the pharmaceutical industry being interviewed by journalists is of concern. That said, the study does not prove that media coverage either fuelled public anxiety about swine flu or the policy decisions made about drug or vaccine funding. Similarly, the...

Inhibition of Nitric Oxide Synthases, But Not Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase, Selectively Worsens Left Ventricular Function After Successful Resuscitation From Cardiac Arrest in Swine
ConclusionsGlobal inhibition of NOS after cardiac arrest and resuscitation markedly worsens hemodynamic variables. Selective inhibition of iNOS after cardiac arrest and resuscitation does not prevent postresuscitation myocardial stunning. There were no significant differences in neurological outcome or survival between treatment groups.

Cardiovascular Parameters in a Swine Model of Normobaric Hypoxia Treated With 5-Hydroxymethyl-2-Furfural (5-HMF)
Conclusion: 5-HMF treatment decreased P50, improved SaO2, and mitigated increases in PAP in this swine model of NH. Introduction The reduction of barometric pressure at altitude is associated with reduced partial pressure of ambient Oxygen (PO2). With lower ambient PO2, it can be anticipated that alveolar (PAO2), arterial O2 (PaO2) and blood O2 content (CaO2) will decrease accordingly, resulting in a widely recognized decrease in maximal O2 consumption (VO2) (Dill and Adams, 1972; Lucas et al., 2011). In humans, with acute exposure to altitude, maximal VO2 decrements are measurable at elevations even as low as 580 ...

A Prospective, Randomized Trial of Intravenous Hydroxocobalamin Versus Whole Blood Transfusion Compared to No Treatment for Class III Hemorrhagic Shock Resuscitation in a Prehospital Swine Model
ConclusionsIntravenous hydroxocobalamin was more effective than no treatment and as effective as whole blood transfusion, in reversing hypotension and inhibiting rises in serum lactate in this prehospital, controlled, Class III swine hemorrhage model.

Intraosseous Versus Intravenous Infusion of Hydroxocobalamin for the Treatment Of Acute Severe Cyanide Toxicity in a Swine Model / La Perfusión Intravenosa Frente a Intraósea de Hidroxocobalamina Para el Tratamiento de la Intoxicación Aguda Grave por Cianuro en un Modelo Porcino
ConclusionsThe authors found no difference in the efficacy of IV versus IO hydroxocobalamin in the treatment of severe cyanide toxicity in a validated porcine model.

ConclusionsIntravenous lipid emulsion treatment failed to improve amitriptyline‐induced hypotension when compared to the standard treatment of sodium bicarbonate in a large animal model of severe TCA overdose. Larger groups with better survival may yield different results from the high mortality observed in this pilot study. Similar amounts of amitriptyline were found in the aqueous and lipid layers. These conclusions are limited to a single ILE regimen. Resumen ObjetivosLos antidepresivos tricíclicos (ATC) son medicaciones altamente lipofílicas utilizadas para tratar el trastorno de estrés postraumático y el dolor ...

Enhancing biomedical search interfaces with images
We describe a search system for biomedical documents that leverages image modalities and an existing index server. We integrate a problem-specific taxonomy of image modalities and image-based data into a custom search system. Our solution features a front-end interface to enhance classical document search results with image-related data, including page thumbnails, figures, captions and image-modality information. We demonstrate the system on a subset of the CORD-19 document collection. A quantitative evaluation demonstrates higher precision and recall for biomedical document retrieval. A qualitative evaluation with domain ...
